Two apostles, one unforgettable day
Ephesus is the only city on earth so closely tied to two apostles: Paul, who taught here for over two years and left with a riot at his back, and John, who tradition says brought Mary here after the Crucifixion, wrote his Gospel nearby, and was buried on the hill above the Temple of Artemis. This tour is built around them both.
The morning belongs to Mary and John — the quiet mountain house where the Church remembers her last years, then Paul's marble city with the Book of Acts open in hand. After lunch and a relaxed artisan visit, the day rises to the Basilica of Saint John, where a simple marble slab under a Byzantine dome marks the Evangelist's tomb — with the single standing column of the Temple of Artemis in the valley below, a view that preaches its own sermon on what remains and what passes away.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the House of Virgin Mary included or optional?
It is part of the standard itinerary, but the day is private — if your heart is set on longer at the Basilica or inside Ephesus, we simply rebalance the hours.
Can we be baptized or renew baptismal vows at the basilica?
The ancient baptistery is a highlight of the visit, though it is an archaeological monument rather than a working font. Visiting clergy sometimes lead a short devotion beside it — we are glad to allow time for that.
Does this tour include the Terrace Houses?
Not by default, to keep the day unhurried. They can be added on the spot for their separate entrance fee — many guests do exactly that.
What is a biblical Ephesus tour, exactly?
It is an Ephesus tour led by a guide who knows the Scriptures as well as the archaeology. The same marble streets, but the theater is read as Acts 19 rather than as a Roman monument, the agora is where Demetrius sold his silver shrines, and the day includes the two sites a general tour usually skips — the House of Virgin Mary and the tomb of Saint John.
How far is the House of Virgin Mary from Ephesus?
About 7 kilometers, roughly a fifteen-minute drive up Bulbul Mountain from the Ephesus lower gate. The Basilica of Saint John is a further 3 kilometers in the other direction, above Selcuk. All three fit comfortably into one private day; on foot or by public transport they do not.
Is there a church at Ephesus today?
No congregation worships in the ancient city itself — it has been uninhabited for centuries. But the House of Virgin Mary is a living shrine with daily Mass, and the ruins of two great ancient churches survive: the Church of Mary where the Council of 431 met, and the Basilica of Saint John over the Evangelist's tomb.
