Ephesus appears in five books of the New Testament. Paul taught here for over two years (Acts 19), wrote 1 Corinthians from the city, and later addressed the Letter to the Ephesians to its church. Timothy served here as first bishop, tradition places Saint John and the Virgin Mary here, and the church of Ephesus received the first of the seven letters of Revelation.
