There are 33 cities in the world claiming that the cave mentioned in the legend of the Seven Sleepers is within their borders. 4 of these cities are located in Turkey. Turkish cities claiming to host Seven Sleepers Cave are Afsin, Ephesus, Lice and Tarsus.
A few years ago, it was suggested that the cave in the story told by the Christians was in Ephesus, and even based on Ephesus sources, this event is said to be certain. Accordingly, the cave is located on the skirts of Panayır Mountain, near the Ephesus Ancient City in Izmir’s Selcuk district.
During the excavations carried out between 1927-1928, the ruins of the church built in the cave and the tombs belonging to the 6th century were found. Inscriptions dedicated to the Seven Sleepers were seen on the church walls and tombs. It is claimed that the owner of 7 human skeletons in the cave is the 7 young people in this legend.
